Basic computer games that usually come pre-installed with your computer, such as Pontoon and Solitaire require very little thought and a lot of luck. Traditional computer games such as Grand Theft Auto and Duke Nukem require that you complete various tasks presented to you. Consequently by driving, stealing, shooting and killing - whilst at the same time collecting trophies - you eventually reach pre-determined checkpoints where the game can be saved and resumed at a later date. Eventually, you will succeed (of course you may not), but then the game will be over. You could go back and play it again selecting a harder level. You may not complete the game, but hey, it’s the same plot with the same scenarios and locations - you just get killed more often. So what’s new??

Strategy computer games are just what the title suggests, but takes what I’ve just described to another level completely. You are in complete control and the actions you take affect the outcome of the game, be it good or bad. This type of game is usually open-ended and can take hours or years to play depending upon how you approach it. You make a decision and you may not see the consequences for some considerable time and if you made the wrong choice, it’s too late to change your mind. This type of game requires you to ‘think before you act’, with little or no luck involved.
